MAN ABOUT A HORSE
Man About a Horse plays traditional bluegrass instruments, but not always traditional bluegrass. The quintet infuses their sound with rock and pop references, funk grooves, and blues roots. Founded in 2014 by a couple of next-door neighbors in Philly, Man About a Horse’s debut LP hit the Billboard Bluegrass Chart in 2017, and earned critical praise from Bluegrass Unlimited, British Bluegrass News, and others. In 2018, the band won the FreshGrass Festival Band Award and was nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association's Band Momentum Award. 'The Horse' has performed at festivals and in venues around the U.S., sharing the stage with Old Crow Medicine Show, Cabinet, Danny Barnes, Hot Buttered Rum, Wood & Wire, Donna the Buffalo, and many more. In 2019 the band will embark on its first international tour. More at www.manabout.horse.
Dark Shadow Recording expands its artist roster with the addition of Philly-based group Man About A Horse. The band of up-and-comers has been making waves on the national and international acoustic music scene, garnering awards and acclaim from organizations like the FreshGrass Festival and the International Bluegrass Music Association.
Fresh is an apt descriptor for the “Horsey-boys”, as their fans affectionately refer to the collective of Matt Royles, Matt Thomas, Dan Whitener, Matthew Hiller, and Eric Lee. Their music is well rooted in tradition, but introduces themes of contemporary life through original material and artfully chosen cover songs.
Label owner and producer Stephen Mougin says: “I’ve seen them live several times starting with a great set at Grey Fox, and then had the privilege to have them join me for a band coaching session at the 2018 IBMA World of Bluegrass in Raleigh, NC. They are an exhilarating group of great pickers and singers searching for a new sound and discovering their own brand of music.
They are a wonderful addition to the Dark Shadow family and I can’t wait to get in the studio!”
Man About A Horse and Mougin will begin pre-production for their fall recording and early 2020 release. They join fellow DSR artists; Becky Buller, Rick Faris, and Nedski & Mojo.
