Dark Shadow Recording is a full service studio and record label led by award-winning Stephen Mougin, located on a hilltop that surveys Music City’s electric skyline. The label produces and turns out music from some the industry’s most promising artists in the Bluegrass, Americana, Country and Folk genres.
Stephen Mougin identifies Dark Shadow Recording as somewhat of a developmental outlet for some of the artist’s who have not yet had the spotlight on them as a solo artist. He says that this is his way of paying it forward in tribute to those who helped him along the way. The label is unique in its approach as they are a company run for musicians by musicians, as Stephen has been playing Bluegrass music since the age of six. He has since progressed to a veteran picker in his own regard as well as a sideman, playing alongside Sam Bush and many others. He also produced for the Rigneys, The Bankesters, Breaking Grass, Bill Evans, and many others in recent years.
Artists on the label include Rick Faris, Becky Buller, Man About a Horse, The Rigneys, Nedski & Mojo, as well as Jana Mougin & Stephen Mougin, who started the label in 2009. The artists on the label are experienced and seasoned in their craft, with some coming from a background of touring with other bands and some finding their success through writing for other artists. Dark Shadow is decidedly old school in their approach, as creating a genuine partnership with the artists is the forefront of the label’s vision.
The growing label has been featured multiple times on Bluegrass Today (itallic) with several chart-topping hits recently. Becky Buller was also recently honored at the Country Music Hall of Fame among “The First Ladies of Bluegrass” exhibit in 2019. With many achievements and awards on their side, the label’s artists have been recognized by many industry organizations, such as the Recording Academy and IBMA. With such success lately, Stephen Mougin sums up his approach at Dark Shadow Recording by stating, “I’m thinking of label decisions from the point of view of the artist. I believe that by supporting the needs of the musicians, we will grow the label.”
